Delayed Girl Code 2.0 to start in January 2021

Girl Codeteaching coding to girls in Maghera & Ballymena

The Bytes Project is happy to announce that, after delays due to COVID-19, the second year of our Girl Code programme will begin in Spring 2021!

Originally, renewed funding was granted for the programme to run for a second year from early 2020. However, as the scheme of activities that participants cover could not be fully implemented remotely, the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting restrictions on youth work caused major delays. We are therefore very pleased that we will be able to carry out a revised version of Girl Code in 2021, with the rural areas around Ballymoney and Coleraine as our main delivery areas.

Girl Code, which is run using funds from the Tampon Tax Community Fund – administered by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland – introduces primary school age girls to tech & coding in a fun and highly creative environment. Tablet based coding and the use of creative tools including green screens and Minecraft, have previously formed the core of the programme’s curriculum and were well received by the first cohort of participants in 2019. While the 2021 iteration will include some changes due to restrictions on our work, we still plan to deliver the same high quality programme to educate and inspire girls about tech, coding and the creative uses of both.

If you want more information about Girl Code, or know of a group of young people who you think might benefit from being involved, contact Sarah Geddis ([email protected]).
