Girl Code: teaching coding to girls in Maghera & Ballymena

Girl Codeteaching coding to girls in Maghera & Ballymena

The last few weeks have seen Bytes’ new Girl Code programme get into its stride, with Tuesday & Thursday night sessions running since March in Ballymena and Maghera.

Funded by the Tampon Tax Fund, with support from the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland, Girl Code aims to introduce girls aged 10 – 16 to tech & coding, as well as providing a safe, inclusive space for learning and development over six weeks of after school sessions.

After receiving funding at the start of 2019, Bytes went through a period of programme development and recruitment before sessions officially began. Our current Maghera group, based in Fairhill Youth Centre, has been focused on using tablets and working through activities from the Hour of Code programme. Meanwhile, we have recently finished working with the first of our Ballymena groups, after a successful six weeks of Tuesday night sessions and will be starting with a new group in the coming weeks.
